The problem
Research Has Never Been More Accessible —or Easier to Misinterpret
Reading and interpreting research is no easy task. It requires a strong understanding and appreciation for the scientific process and methods, the hierarchy of evidence, research design, and statistics – areas that many people have never been taught with enough attention or depth.
Without that foundation, it becomes difficult to judge what was studied, how it was studied, what the results of a study actually suggest, and how can those findings be applied in practice. As a result, people often rely on reading only abstracts or specific sections of a study, or on someone else’s interpretation of the research.
This is where context and nuance are easily lost. Abstracts leave out important details. Individual studies, can lead you astray when treated as definitive, while on social media science is frequently discussed as absolute and communicated with more confidence than the evidence supports.
01
Science feels contradictory or like it is constantly “flip-flopping”
03
You depend on other people’s interpretations of the research
02
You struggle to understand study methods or whether statistics were used appropriately
04
You are unsure whether research findings actually apply to your clients or practice
Research Fundamentals is intended to teach you the foundations and provide you with a structured framework for evaluating research independently, so you can better understand what a study actually found, how certain those findings are, how they fit within the broader body of evidence, and whether they are relevant and applicable to your own practice
The outcome
What Skills Will You Develop?
By the end of the cohort, you should be better able to:
- Understand the scientific method, evidence-based practice, and the hierarchy of evidence.
- Formulate specific and relevant research questions, and search the scientific literature more effectively.
- Critically assess common social media claims, the evidence supporting or opposing them, and recognize weak reasoning, pseudoscientific arguments, and if conclusions go beyond what the research supports.
- Understand the anatomy of a research paper and how to interpret each section individually.
- Critically assess study methods and the most common measurements used within exercise science research.
- Understand the basics of statistical inference, identify and interpret common statistical tests based on the study design, and recognize the uncertainty surrounding the results.
- Critically interpret systematic reviews and meta-analyses and understand how individual study findings fit within the wider body of evidence.
- Assess whether research findings are relevant and applicable to your coaching practice (e.g., specific populations, clients, and practical situations).
- Recognize common problems and questionable practices in research, including selective reporting, multiple testing, p-hacking, publication bias, conflicts of interest, and a lack of transparency.
- Apply research in practice and communicate scientific evidence responsibly, with appropriate context, nuance, and uncertainty.
